Ailey II
Program Details
Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater's junior company serves as a bridge between The Ailey School and the professional dance world. Founded in 1974, the educational mission of Ailey II is to:
- Offer first-hand experience working with noted choreographers
- Offer individualized coaching
- Provide extensive professional performance opportunities
- Provide young artists with additional technique training
- Develop teaching skills by conducting master classes
Ailey II offers unique opportunities for artists to refine their technique while gaining invaluable performing and teaching experience during their tenure with the Company. Dancers emerge as accomplished professionals – technically superior and proficient in numerous techniques and styles, artistically experienced, and knowledgeable about themselves and the profession. Ailey II members have gone on to pursue successful careers as dancers, teachers and choreographers, while others have become members of professional dance companies, including Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, on Broadway, and in television, film, and video.
Ailey II continues to win unmatched critical praise for its residencies at major colleges and universities as well as its visits to elementary, middle and high schools across the U.S. The Company has received numerous honors, awards and proclamations in recognition of its community outreach programs.
