Ailey Extension Work Exchange Program
Ailey Extension exemplifies Alvin Ailey’s legacy that dance comes from the people and should be given back to the people by making dance accessible to all people in a welcoming, non-competitive environment. Ailey Extension offers public technique, dance fitness, and world dance classes and workshops to dancers of all levels, from absolute beginners to professionals.
Ailey Extension is seeking highly motivated dance enthusiasts who are personable and reliable to join the Extension’s front desk team. As a vital part of the Extension Team, you will assist Desk Associates with day-to-day operations in exchange for dance classes and a truly rewarding opportunity in your dance community.
If you enjoy working in a fast-paced and creative environment and have a passion for customer service, join our team and receive free Ailey Extension classes as well as discounts to workshops & masterclasses in exchange of your time.
*The program requires a minimum 12-week commitment working one day per week for 4 hours. Volunteers must be 16 years or older.

Summer Internship Opportunities
Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation, Inc. (AILEY), one of the world’s premier dance institutions, is offering a summer internship program as part of our ongoing effort to offer rewarding learning opportunities to outstanding candidates. While this would be a paid opportunity, we are unable to provide housing. We do collaborate with schools so that interns can receive academic credit and are able to take dance and fitness classes at Ailey Extension at no charge.
This summer we are offering experiences in Production, Public Relations, Ailey Arts In Education & Community Programs, Ailey Extension, and Finance.
Eligibility
Our internship program is available to college and graduate students. International applicants are encouraged to apply, however AILEY does not sponsor visas and applicants will be required to provide proof of visa at time of resume submission.
Dates
Cover letter and resume submission: April/early May
Program Dates: end of May/early June through mid-August. Start and end dates may vary based on assigned placement and students’ educational requirements.
Intern placements will be hybrid requiring both in office and remote work, subject to change based on departmental need.

The Artistic team for Ailey II is looking for a personable, organized, focused and passionate intern, experienced in the field of dance or has a passion for the art form, to support Ailey II’s Artistic Team. This opportunity will provide support that includes working closely with Ailey II’s Artistic Director.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Coordinate Artistic Director’s schedule for internal and external events, weekly artistic staff meetings, and proactively ensures the calendar is followed and respected; greets visitors as they arrive
- Maintain Artistic Director’s short and long-term commitments and responsibilities, and recommend course of action, referral or response accordingly
- Maintain correspondence between artistic staff and council members, schedule meetings and take notes
- Communicate directly to contacts to maintain the artistic director’s relationships and serve as a resource in these interactions
- Provide phone and email coverage for Artistic Director, authoring correspondence on her behalf as directed
- In collaboration with artistic staff schedule and organize meetings with artists and partners
- Assist in the organization and planning of special events
- Assist the Artistic Director in the tracking and maintenance of any submitted materials
- Organize digital files on the company Google Drive for the artistic staff
- Schedule staff meetings and department head meetings
- Proofread and copy edit materials, as needed
- Perform other duties, as needed, as assigned by the Artistic and Associate Artistic Director, with keen attention to detail and a particular focus on meeting deadlines
Requirements:
- Interest and/or experience in Arts Administration, Performing Arts, or Dance industry
- Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask in a fast-paced work environment
- Excellent written and verbal communication, and organizational skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel

The Public Relations department is looking for a motivated, responsible, and personable intern to support ongoing public relations initiatives. The position will provide support to the Public Relations team in implementing the organization’s public relations efforts, including the execution of publicity campaigns for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ailey II, The Ailey School, Ailey Arts In Education & Community Programs, Ailey Extension, and Special Events. Depending upon schedule and areas of interest, Public Relations Interns can play a key role in certain areas of responsibility.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Maintaining database of media contacts and researching outlets for potential coverage opportunities.
- Assisting with research, writing, and compiling information for press materials.
- Monitoring press coverage and compiling weekly press clippings.
- Staffing performances and special events when appropriate (e.g. Ailey’s BAM season).
- Providing general administrative support.

Children’s Aid AileyCamp New York offers a fun-filled 6-week summer day camp where young people ages 11-14 learn to dance and explore their creativity. The program helps young people develop their self-confidence in an atmosphere of warmth, respect, and trust. Campers take dance classes from experienced teaching artists in popular styles such as West African, jazz, ballet, and the Lester Horton technique (which is the basis of many of Alvin Ailey’s works). Campers also participate in workshops to build leadership and communication skills and enjoy a variety of athletic and social activities.
Children’s Aid AileyCamp New York is looking for dedicated, hands-on interns who want to make a difference in a child’s life while learning the administrative responsibilities of running a summer day camp. The internship runs through the summer and will require 28-35 hours per week, Monday–Friday (4-5 days). All interns are required to attend a 2-day orientation prior to the start of AileyCamp. Children’s Aid AileyCamp New York takes place off-site at Children's Aid College Prep Charter School and the dates are July 1–August 9, 2024.
Responsibilities for the Children’s Aid AileyCamp New York Intern include:
Office and day-to-day tasks related to AileyCamp, including collecting daily attendance.
Manage AileyCamp phone lines, including taking messages and returning calls.
Assist campers with class content, dance skills, choreography, and activities as needed in classes.
Attend camp classes and activities with an assigned group (at least 4 days) Monday–Friday between the hours of 8:30am–3:30pm.
Participate in lunch duty, free periods, field trip days, and general supervision of campers.
Document AileyCamp with video and photography.
Assist faculty members as needed in the creation of the end-of-camp performance, i.e. participating in rehearsals, preparation, and day-of-final-performance activities.
Children’s Aid AileyCamp New York Interns will be supervised by the Group Leader, both reporting to the Children’s Aid AileyCamp New York Director. The AileyCamp interns’ primary role will be to assist campers with class content, dance skills, choreography, and activities as needed. Group Leaders will assist dance instructors or facilitators with classroom management, monitor campers’ behavior, and act as a liaison between campers, faculty members, Guidance Counselor, and AileyCamp Director with assistance from the AileyCamp intern as needed.

Ailey Extension was founded to continue Alvin Ailey’s legacy that “dance came from the people and should be delivered back to the people” by offering open dance classes for all levels. For the last 19 years, Ailey Extension has brought together people of all backgrounds to train with renowned dance instructors from around the world at the home of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York City. Ailey Extension’s programming includes weekly adult dance classes, special workshops, student performances, kids and teens classes, seminars, and private groups.
The Ailey Extension team is collaborative and multi-faceted—team members work in scheduling, customer service, operations, production, finance, data analytics, marketing, and more. Ailey Extension is looking for an intern with a strong interest in arts administration looking to gain hands-on experience.
Responsibilities and learning opportunities for the Ailey Extension Intern include but are not limited to:
- Supporting the Ailey Extension team with day-to-day business operations while building upon essential arts administration skills.
- Assisting with backstage production for the 2024 World Dance Celebration.
- Assisting with client management and operations for the 2024 Ailey Experience NYC and the 2024 Ailey Horton Teacher Conference.
- Gaining hands-on customer service experience working with the Desk Operations Manager on account management and front desk operations.
- Learning the ins and outs of using AILEY’s studio scheduling software with Ailey Extension’s Scheduling Administrator.
- Working with Ailey Extension’s Marketing Manager on projects for social media accounts and email campaigns.
- Developing an understanding of business analytics, budgeting, and trend reporting with Ailey Extension’s Budget Data Analyst.
- Connect with AILEY staff and leadership throughout the organization to learn more about the operations of a dance organization.
Skills/Qualifications:

The mission of AILEY’s Finance Department is to provide centralized and efficient financial operations, creating the platform to meet artistic, educational, and administrative objectives. We are looking for a motivated and analytical Accounting Intern who is ready to apply knowledge of financial terms and principles to an authentic real-world experience.
Responsibilities for the Accounting Intern include but are not limited to:
- Analyzing data, reconciliations, preparing supporting schedules, and learning about various accounting activities.
- Assisting with the fiscal year end closing and annual financial statement audit.
- Preparing bank reconciliations and associated journal entries.
- Analyzing prepaid additions and preparing associated journal entries.
- Analyzing fixed asset additions and preparing associated journal entries.
