The Ailey Extension Work Exchange Program
Come join the Ailey Extension Team! Ailey Extension seeks part-time work exchange volunteers for its dance and fitness classes designed for the general public.
Team members will be responsible for:
- Registering new students, selling classes and signing students into class
- Taking attendance for classes
- Distributing class schedules and workshop flyers
- Responding to inquiries about classes and techniques both in person and on the telephone
- Reconciling the cash register after shift
- Assisting with other special tasks during shift
- Team members will earn classes for every full shift worked during business hours, Monday through Friday 10am to 9pm and weekends, 9am to 7pm.
Skills and Experience: Excellent customer service a must; computer and technology skills helpful; prior retail experience preferred; ability to work in a fast-paced environment; knowledge of dance; and knowledge of MINDBODY software a plus.
All applicants accepted are required to commit to at least 3 hours per week and 4- 6 months to the work exchange program.

Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation, one of the world’s premier dance institutions, has a year-round internship program as part of our ongoing effort to offer rewarding learning opportunities to outstanding candidates. Please be aware we are not able to provide a stipend, housing, or any other type of compensation. We do work with schools so that interns can receive academic credit and are able to take dance and fitness classes at the Ailey Extension at no charge.
We offer experiences in Marketing, Development, Special Events, Public Relations, Ailey Arts In Education & Community Programs, Ailey School, Finance, Information Technology, Production, and The Ailey Extension.
Eligibility
Our internship program is available to college, and graduate students. International applicants are encouraged to apply, however, Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation does not sponsor visas and applicants will be required to provide proof of visa at time of resume submission.

Internship Opportunities
The Marketing department is looking for a motivated, responsible, and personable intern. The position will provide support to the marketing team in implementing the organization’s marketing efforts, largely geared toward the performance seasons. The intern will gain knowledge in all pillars of our company, including Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ailey II, The Ailey School, Arts In Education and Community Programs.
Responsibilities for the Marketing Intern include but are not limited to:
- Help design, create, and distribute collateral amongst all company platforms
- Research and compile intern project and final presentation
- Help create social media and email content
- Staff performances and special events when appropriate (e.g. Ailey’s NYCC season)
- Provide general administrative support
Skills and qualifications the ideal candidate will possess:
- Interest and/or experience in Marketing, Arts Administration, Performing Arts, or dance industry
- Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask in a fast-paced work environment
- Excellent written and verbal communication and organizational skills

The Marketing department seeks a highly motivated Graphic Design Intern to join our in-house team. The brand creative studio develops all internal and external materials. Our range of work includes printed and digital materials for the first company’s performances, as well as for a range of other activities including Ailey II, The Ailey School, Ailey Extension, fundraising efforts, and more.
Responsibilities for the Graphic Design Intern include but are not limited to:
- Help design and create marketing material amongst all company platforms

Skills and qualifications the ideal candidate will possess:

The Public Relations department is looking for a motivated, responsible, and personable intern to support ongoing public relations initiatives. The position will provide support to the Public Relations team in implementing the organization’s public relations efforts, including the execution of publicity campaigns for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ailey II, The Ailey School, Arts In Education and Community Programs, Ailey Extension, and Special Events. Depending upon schedule and areas of interest, the Public Relations Intern can play a key role in certain areas of responsibility.
Responsibilities for the Public Relations Intern include but are not limited to:
- Maintain database of media contacts and research outlets for potential coverage opportunities
- Assist with research, writing, and compiling information for press materials

The Development department’s Patron Engagement team is looking for motivated, responsible, and personable interns. The position will provide support to the individual giving team in implementing the organization’s individual giving efforts to cultivate and steward prospective and existing donors. They seek two part-time college interns available 2–3 days a week.
Responsibilities for the Patron Engagement Intern include but are not limited to:
- Research donors and prospects and create associated reports
- Ongoing membership renewal and gift acknowledgment process
- Update and maintain constituent records in the donor database
- Preparation and execution of long-term mail projects

The Institutional Giving team is responsible for maintaining existing relationships and establishing new pipelines for funding from foundation, corporate, and government entities. The Development Intern, Institutional Giving must possess strong research, writing, administrative skills and have keen eye for detail.

The Special Events Department seeks a detail-oriented and high-energy intern to assist with special events-related projects. We are looking for a graduate-level student for 18–24 hours a week.
Responsibilities for the Special Events Intern include but are not limited to:
- Assist the Special Events team with the planning of the Opening Night Gala (scheduled for November 2020), including:
- Research and solicit gala gift bags sponsors;
- Update solicitation lists used for invitation mailings and ongoing follow-up using Excel;
- Manage relationships between Alvin Ailey and gala vendors;
- Coordinate shipments between Ailey and its gala vendors;
- Conduct regular inventory of spirits, wine and other products used for Ailey events;
- Archive event-related materials;
- Run errands as necessary;
- Perform ad hoc duties for the Associate Director of Special Events
- Support the Associate Director of Special Events with final execution of event logistics for the Ailey Spirit Gala (scheduled for June 2020), including:
- Sort and pack all on-site materials needed on the day of the event
- Organize staff and volunteer teams and credentials
- Distribute meeting materials to Ailey staff members
- Assist with all other ad hoc duties

The Arts In Education Intern will assist the AIE department in day-to-day administrative tasks under the supervision of the Assistant, AIE.
Responsibilities for the Arts In Education Intern include but are not limited to:
- Data entry of evaluations for AileyDance Kids into Survey Monkey and update evaluation tracking sheet in Excel
- Read through evaluations and pull quotes and other anecdotal information
- Organize and edit teaching artist and musician biographies
- Create newsworthy blog posts for Ailey website
- Coordinate culminating presentations by students in AIE residencies including organizing costumes and creating the performance programs
- Update AIE documents as needed
- Assist in collection and filing of AileyDance Kids lesson plans
- Update and maintain ADK master calendar

Children’s Aid/AileyCamp New York offers a fun-filled six-week summer day camp where young people ages 11–14 learn to dance and explore their creativity. The program helps youth develop their self-confidence in an atmosphere of warmth, respect and trust. Campers take dance classes from experienced teaching artists in popular styles such as West African, jazz, ballet, tap and the Lester Horton technique (which is the basis of many of Alvin Ailey’s works). Campers also participate in workshops to build leadership and communication skills and enjoy a variety of athletic and social activities.
Children’s Aid/AileyCamp New York is looking for dedicated, hands-on interns who want to make a difference in a child’s life while learning the administrative responsibilities of running a summer day camp. The internship runs through the summer and will require 28–35 hours per week, Monday–Friday (4–5 days). All interns are required to attend a 1–3 day orientation prior to the start of AileyCamp. Children’s Aid/AileyCamp New York takes place off-site at a New York City Public School in the Bronx.
Responsibilities for the Children’s Aid/AileyCamp New York Intern include:
- Office and day-to-day tasks related to AileyCamp, including collecting daily attendance
- Manage AileyCamp phone lines, including taking messages and returning calls
- Assist campers with class content, dance skills, choreography and activities as needed in classes
- Attend camp classes and activities with an assigned group (at least three days) Monday–Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.
- Participate in lunch duty, free periods, field trip days and general supervision of campers
- Document AileyCamp with video and photography
- Assist faculty members as needed in the creation of the end-of-camp performance, i.e. participating in rehearsals, preparation and day-of-final performance activities
Children’s Aid/AileyCamp New York Interns will be supervised by the Group Leader, both reporting to the Children’s Aid/AileyCamp New York Co-Directors, and the AileyCamp interns’ primary role will be to assist campers with class content, dance skills, choreography and activities as needed. Group Leaders will assist dance instructors or facilitators with classroom management, monitor camper’s behavior, act as a liaison between campers, faculty members, Guidance Counselor and AileyCamp Co-Directors with assistance from the AileyCamp Intern as needed.
Skills and qualifications the ideal candidate will possess:
Children’s Aid/AileyCamp New York Interns will be required to participate in a background check, including but not limited to federal and sex offender checks, fingerprinting, and courses required for certification. The mission of the Finance Department is to provide centralized and efficient financial operations, creating the platform to meet Artistic, Educational and Administrative objectives. We are looking for an insightful and analytical individual to be intern as a financial and strategical partner to assist with the departments long-term goal of automating our accounts payable process.
Responsibilities for the Finance Intern include but are not limited to:
- Creating a flowchart mapping out the current Accounts Payable (AP) Process
- Research third party vendors that can aid in a streamlined and efficient AP process
- Schedule vendor calls to determine which if their business platform fits the needs of our AP
- Prepare a presentation of potential vendors and with solutions and recommendations on selections
- Set up demonstrations with the selected vendors and with the Director of Finance assist in vetting process
- Assist with implementation of vendor ultimately chosen for the AP
