Caverna Magica was originally commissioned by the Royal Danish Ballet in 1983 and then set on the Ailey Company in 1986 to music by Andreas Wollenweider. A ritualistic celebration, it is dramatically designed and visually stunning. it uses an array of colorful scrims that fly in and out and the 19 dancers are clad in fantastic shades of plums, pinks and rose. Alvin Ailey prepared for this oeuvre by first doing a workshop on the Ailey School students to work on movement sequences.
