Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater dancer Samantha Figgins and Ailey Extension student Trinity McFadden share what it’s like to be a dancer and Deaf.

Recently, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater dancer Samantha Figgins met Ailey Extension student Trinity McFadden for the first time to talk about what it’s like being Deaf and dancers.   

McFadden was thrilled to meet someone that’s just like her, a Black Woman, Deaf, and a dancer and Figgins was happy to meet her because for many years, she’s been advocating for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people, especially dancers. 

Having a disability that isn’t apparent at first glance can be frustrating, but Figgins has spoken up for herself to get the things she needs to thrive as a dancer. She realizes that she’s a role model for other Deaf and Hard of Hearing dancers and aims to help pave an easier path for those who look up to her.  

McFadden also notes that with people focusing on inclusivity in the arts, it’s important to listen to disabled creatives and make sure everyone has what they need to succeed. Watch the video below to learn about their stories.
