Lauren Shapiro

Pianist

Lauren Shapiro began as a self-taught pianist until commencing piano lessons at the age of 15 at the Bronx House Music School with Columbian concert pianist Blanca Uribe.  She received her early education in writing in the New York City public schools, and later earned a B.A. degree in music/English from Queens College and a B.Mus. from Manhattan School of Music, where she majored in music theory and took piano minor lessons from Martha Pestalozzi. She also has an M.A. in Writing from Manhattanville College.  She has been an accompanist at The Ailey School, Marymount Manhattan College, Hofstra University, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School at ABT, and the 92nd Street Y. Her music journalism has appeared in Dance Studio Life, Education Update, Dance Teacher Magazine, Dancer Magazine, School of American Ballet Newsletter, Ballet Review, Dance Spirit, and Dance and the Arts. Her article 'For Dancers, English is a Second Language' was originally published by World and I Online has been re-issued for Nook and Kindle.  Ms. Shapiro's song 'Better Things to Do' co-written with Kenny Brescia, was recorded by Annika Chambers on her album Wild & Free.  Her personal reflections on musical VS non-musical relationships include 'The Bottom Line and the Big Picture' and 'So Much New York!', published by the Bangalore Review.
