Carmen de Lavallade

Carmen de Lavallade has enjoyed a long and distinguished career in dance, working with such internationally renowned choreographers as her mentor, Lester Horton; John Butler; Alvin Ailey; Agnes DeMille; Jack Cole; and Geoffrey Holder, her husband. Ms. de Lavallade’s choreographic and acting credits include the Yale Repertory Theatre’s productions of Seven Deadly SinsA Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Tempest. In 1999 Ms. de Lavallade directed Lena: The Legacy at Avery Fisher Hall. She appeared in Debbie Allen’s production of Soul Possessed at the Alliance Theater in Atlanta, GA. Ms. de Lavallade is the recipient of an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from the Boston Conservatory of Music and the Dance Magazine Award. As an actress, she has won the Clarence Bayfield Award presented by Actors Equity.
