New Works Fund

When Alvin Ailey founded the Company in 1958, his purpose was not only to provide a repository for his own works, but also to actively commission works from both established and emerging choreographers. Today, the organization remains committed to creating dynamic new pieces as well as to preserving important American dance works.

Over its fifty-three year history, the company has presented 221 works by 85 choreographers, creating one of the world’s largest modern dance repertories.

The Ailey repertory represents and reflects the wide variety of cultural influences that make up America. The Company travels to cities large and small reaching diverse audiences across the country and around the globe.

On July 1, 2011, Robert Battle took the helm of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater as only the third Artistic Director in the Company’s history. Mr. Battle has been lauded for his expressive and innovative choreography and is poised to continue Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s great tradition of exposing people from all ethnic, social, and economic backgrounds to a culturally diverse and artistically innovative dance works.
