What is Ailey II? Ailey II began in 1974 as the Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble, when Alvin Ailey initiated a workshop composed of the most promising scholarship students from The Ailey School. The original members of the Company were handpicked by Mr. Ailey from among that group. Ailey II, which emphasizes a balance of repertoire, technique and performance, has become one of the most popular dance companies in the United States. Ailey II is an exceptional company that merges the spirit and energy of the country's best young dance talent with the passion and creative vision of today's most outstanding emerging choreographers.

When do you hold auditions? Auditions for AAADT are held once a year usually in May. Information about the auditions will be posted on the website once details are confirmed.

What is The Ailey Extension? A program of dance and fitness classes designed for the general public. The program is comprised of beginning to intermediate-level classes offered mainly in the evenings and on weekends to fit into the working professional's busy schedule. The Ailey Extension is warm and welcoming, non-competitive environment to take classes taught by teachers who are experts in their fields. All levels are welcome from the novice to the professional.
What is a keytag? When you come in for your first class, we issue you an Ailey keytag. Ailey Keytags are small orange & red key chain tags that have barcodes on the other side. These barcodes are unique to each student and identifies you in our system. When you come to take a class, with one swipe we can bring up your account details or sign you into class if you have classes in your account. There is no monetary value attached to a keytag.
Is there a membership fee? No, there is no membership fee like a gym. All classes can be taken on a walk-in basis anytime. No need to sign up in advance.
How do I register online (i.e. create an account)? 1. Go to "www.alvinailey.org" 2. Click on "Take an Ailey Extension Class" 3. Click on "Register" 4. Click on "New Users: Sign Up", enter your first and last names and click "next" 5. Fill in all the required fields and click "Create Account"
How do I purchase classes online? Once your account is set up and you have registered into our system, you can purchase a single class or multiple classes at a discount:

How do I purchase classes at The Ailey Studios? Once you have registered and your account has been created, you can either buy classes online or at The Ailey Studios.

How do I enroll in a class? Once you have registered, your account has been created, you have your keytag, and you have purchased classes, enrolling into a class is quick and easy. When you arrive at The Ailey Studios tell our Ailey Extension staff at the right-hand corner of the security desk which class you would like to take and they will scan your keytag. That is it!
What is the cost of a class? Class prices range from $16 for a single to $325 for 25 classes. We also offer discounts to employees of our Corporate Donors. What should I wear for class? In general, we suggest you wear comfortable loose fitting clothes that you can move in, like sweats, yoga pants, t-shirts, tanks, etc.
For Horton, West African, Afro Caribbean, Capoeira, Samba and all fitness classes, we suggest you wear no shoes or socks, just barefeet.
For B'way Theater Dance and Hip Hop, we suggest you wear jazz shoes or dance sneakers (no street shoes).
For Salsa and other partner dance courses, we suggest ladies wear shoes to do dance steps in, perhaps a low heel and skirt and gentlemen wear trousers, shirt, and regular shoes (like normal everyday attire).
How do I know if a class is right for me? Each class specifies level indicating its relative difficulty. For example, Capoeira (Beg) is a beginning level Capoeira class. Generally classes in The Ailey Extension are easier and slower paced. If you are interested in a particular class and are concerned about the level, we suggest you observe the class before taking.
Do you have locker rooms and showers? The Ailey Studios has a state-of-the-art locker room with showers. Lockers are for day use only so you will need to provide your own lock. Belongings may not be kept in lockers overnight.
How old do I have to be to take class? You must be 16 years or older to take any open enrollment classes at The Ailey Studios including those offered by The Ailey School.
Do you have classes for the elderly? Many of the classes offered by The Ailey Extension program are suitable for the elderly. If you are interested in a particular class, we suggest you observe the class before taking.
Can I buy dance clothes at your facility? The Ailey Boutique offers a wide variety of dance and fitness wear featuring the Ailey logo. Hours of operations are Monday through Thursday 9am - 7:30pm and Friday and Saturday 9am - 4pm.

What is the capacity of your studios? The Ailey Studios can comfortably hold between 50 and 300 people depending on the event. Your Ailey rental representative will help you choose a studio catered to your event.
May I use your studios for rehearsals that are not dance-related? The Ailey Studios welcomes all types of rehearsals and events: music videos, Broadway productions, educational events, etc.
What kinds of events can be held in the studios? There have been many different types of events in The Ailey Studios, including post-performance receptions, large sit-down dinners with dancing, and even a fashion show.
Are pets allowed in the building? Although The Ailey Studios may be used for rehearsals, we do not permit dogs, cats or other four-legged creatures in the facility.
THE AILEY CITIGROUP THEATER
I'm going to be speaking before my performance in the theater. Do you have a podium I can use? Unfortunately, AAADT is unable to provide a podium.
Do you have a microphone available? The Ailey Studios have microphones available for rental. Please let your Ailey contacts know as far in advance as possible if you will need a microphone.
What is the capacity of The Ailey Citigroup Theater? The Ailey Citigroup Theater has flexible seating and rows of chairs are placed before the first row to increase the theater’s capacity to 275.
I'm planning a performance but I don't have a stage manager. Do I need one? Can you provide one? AAADT strongly advise that theater renters have a stage manager and AAADT is unable to provide renters with one, but can make recommendations.
What about sound and lighting? All theater renters are required to hire a lighting assistant and a sound assistant. Your Ailey rental representative can recommend technicians for your event.
What is a "tech rehearsal?" How long do I need to "tech?" A "tech rehearsal" is a rehearsal before the opening of a production where all of the technical aspects (lighting, sound, etc) of the production are determined and rehearsed. AAADT strongly recommends that each theater renter allows no less than 8 hours for technical rehearsals.
Is there a box office in the building? Do you provide ushers and box office staff? The Ailey Citigroup Theater has an area that serves as a box office on the Performance Entry level. AAADT does not provide ushers and box office staff, but can provide a renter with recommendations.
I would like to have an Ailey performance for my organization’s event. What types of performances are available? Within the Ailey Organization, there are a number of student performance groups as well as Ailey II, our critically acclaimed second company. After you submit your rental application form, you will be able to discuss performance options in detail with your rental representative.
Is there a preferred caterer? You may use any catering company you wish. AAADT can provide you with recommendations. Please note that there is not an onsite kitchen.
Are there any outdoor spaces I can use? There are two seasonal outdoor spaces that are available to rent.
