Tiba, Capoeira Instructor
Biography
Tiba Vieira started his capoeira training in Brazil with Mestre Jelon Vieira, the pioneer of capoeira in the United States. His first contact with the art was at a very young age, but he only started training when Mestre Jelon developed a capoeira program for kids in “Boca do Rio,” a neighborhood in Salvador, Bahia.
In 1997, Professor Tiba moved to the United States to continue his capoeira training under the mentoring of Mestre Jelon and to attend school.
Professor Tiba has been learning and teaching the art of capoeira for almost two decades. He currently teaches at the Ailey Extension and at Tisch School of the Arts, and in his spare time he teaches at after- school programs and community centers throughout New York City.
He has taught classes for children and adults from all walks of life in New York City, including the Training Academy, Saint Anthony’s School, Educational Alliance, Broadway Dance Center and the Alvin Ailey School. He has also taught at Bard College, Annadale-on-Hudson, NY; Dance Connecticut, Hartford, CT; the Cleo Parker Robinson Summer Festival, Denver, CO; Oberlin College, Oberlin, OH; Capoeira Luanda, Bandung, Indonesia; and Capoeira Luanda, Istanbul, Turkey. He has also performed regularly throughout the United States and internationally in Pusan, South Korea at the Pusan Film Festival, in Tokyo and Toronto.
In addition, Professor Tiba has appeared in TNT’s “Martial Artists of the 20th Century,” the New York Film Academy’s “Fascinado Pela Capoeira,” the PBS serie’s “Egg: The Arts Show,” GQ Magazine, Free Magazine, LXTV/NBC “Spot light of the week,” and Gettyimages. He also holds a BFA degree in Electronic Design and Multimedia.
