In her four decade long career as a choreographer, artistic director, dancer and master teacher, Jacqulyn Buglisi has made an indelible impact on the field of contemporary dance. Having performed throughout the world with the Martha Graham Dance Company and now with her own company, Buglisi Dance Theatre, she is known for highly visual, imagistic dances that use literature, history, and heroic archetypes as a primary source. BDT presents its NYC seasons at The Joyce Theater, and has been invited perform at The Kennedy Center, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Australia’s Melbourne Festival, and Italy’s 2009 Oriente Occidente Festival. Her works, archived at the NY Public Library, have been commissioned by such companies as the NY Flamenco Festival, Spain; Shankar Performing Arts Co., India; Shanghai Dance Ensemble, China; LMCC/River to River Festival, NCDT, Richmond Ballet, The Juilliard School, George Mason University, Cal State Univ./Long Beach, Yale Center for British Art, and the Ailey/Fordham BFA ensemble. She serves on the faculties of The Juilliard School, Martha Graham School, the famed Performing Arts H.S. (alumna), and conducts NYC public school outreach programs and annual workshops at Steps on B’way. Her honors include the Fiorello LaGuardia Award for Excellence in Dance, American Dance Guild Award, NEA, NYSCA and Altria’s Women Choreographer Initiative Award.
