Season Details
Ailey's 2011 New York City Center season runs 5 weeks only -- from November 30 through January 1. Mr. Battle has assembled an extraordinary, diverse program that celebrates Alvin Ailey’s legacy while reaching into new directions, featuring six premieres and new productions:
- WORLD PREMIERE: Home, a new piece by the bold hip-hop choreographer Rennie Harris, is set to a soul-lifting score of gospel house music and inspired by stories of people living with or affected by HIV
- COMPANY PREMIERE: Paul Taylor’s modern classic Arden Court, the first work by this American master to be performed by Ailey dancers
- COMPANY PREMIERE: Minus 16, a phenomenally inventive work by Ohad Naharin, which incorporates the dancers' improvisations and audience participation on stage
- COMPANY PREMIERE: Robert Battle’s bravura solo Takademe, which mixes humor and high-flying movement in a savvy deconstruction of Indian Kathak dance rhythms
- TWO NEW PRODUCTIONS of ballets not performed in years: Joyce Trisler’s haunting solo Journey (performed with live music), and Mr. Ailey’s standout work Streams, a gorgeous exploration of the architecture of bodies in space
Most performances end with Mr. Ailey’s timeless masterpiece, Revelations.
