About Shelter

Description

Shelter is a passionate statement about the physical and emotional deprivation of homeless people. Set to an inventive score which incorporates poetry, this dramatic work delivers the compelling message that the poverty of individuals will inevitably lead to the destitution of all humanity.

Born and raised in Kansas City, MO, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar was steeped from childhood in both sacred and secular aspects of popular African-American culture. She trained with Joseph Stevenson, a student of Katherine Dunham; received a B.A. in dance from the University of Missouri at Kansas City and earned a M.F.A. in dance from Florida State University. In 1984, four years after her move to New York City, she founded Urban Bush Women. Jawole Willa Jo Zollar has been commissioned to set work on Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ballet Arizona, Philadanco, Florida State University, Florida A&M, University of Maryland and University of Florida.
