Echoes

Thang Dao’s Echoes began as a depiction of haunting memories. But this poignant ballet has since taken on a life of its own, as the echoes of memories cascade into the distant past while pervading our awareness of the present.

The Corner

The Corner is an ensemble work that blends contemporary hip hop movement and vernacular with post-modern movement sensibility and several nods to classical ballet idiom, in an effort to reference an urban social interaction that recreates life on 'the corner.'

Ailey Highlights VI

Includes excerpts of Blues Suite, Lark Ascending, Hidden Rites, Isba, and Escapades.

Ailey Highlights VI

Includes excerpts of Blues Suite, Lark Ascending, Hidden Rites, Isba, and Escapades.

Takademe

The complex, tightly woven rhythms of Indian Kathak dance are deconstructed and abstracted in this percussive, fast-paced work by choreographer Robert Battle. Clear shapes and propulsive jumps mimic the vocalized rhythmic syllables of Sheila Chandra's jazzy score.

"…[a] fast-moving excursion into rhythmic exotica."
- Jennifer Dunning, The New York Times Company Premiere, 2000

Splendid Isolation II

Jessica Lang created Splendid Isolation II, an adaptation of her work Splendid Isolation, specifically for the Ailey II dancers. Set to the choral piece O Maria, Stella Maris by Trio Mediaeval and Adagietto, from Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 in C Sharp Minor, the work focuses around a woman enveloped in a large skirt and a man, while the rest of the dancers perform on the perimeter, isolating the couple in the center.

Doscongio

Choreographer Robert Moses created his signature work Doscongio in 1998. A solo set to two movements of Chopin's Sonata for cello and piano (op. 65), Doscongio is both fiercely focused and relaxed. About the schism in one man's view of himself, the first movement is his moment of public bravura and the second his private realization of the fallacy of that image.

Shards

Donald Byrd's Shards is a skillfully crafted work, which showcases his eclectic and complex choreography. Set to music by Mio Morales, Byrd expertly combines passion and formality in this ballet, creating the perfect vehicle for the stunning Ailey II dancers.
